I love this so much.

Last week I was privileged to be in a zoom audience listening to Amy Tan and Drew Lanham. Drew asked Amy about her drawing process. She chose birds before a storm as an example of learning how to draw “frantic eating”. Today I witnessed about 50 birds pecking on my dirt lane. I came inside and the storm warning was just coming up. Amazing world of bird wisdom…

Their love of the practice of birding was compelling. Whatever they were facing with problems like racism could be left behind as they observed birds. And not left behind literally but just for a time — they were humans engaging with birds. I love their books but now I love their respect and devotion to birds.

I didn’t know they pile up together like that and in such numbers! I wish they had nuthatches in Florida. Cool little birds!!
